Update from the NSRC on outstanding Student Funding

Dear students,

We are aware that some funding required for student payments and registrations has not yet been released to Unisa. This affects certain NSFAS and Funza Lushaka-funded students, including students awaiting allowances, second-semester registration top-ups and the finalisation of new registrations.

During our handover process, we received a clear account of the hardship students experienced during the June payment delays. We understand the anxiety and frustration caused when students are uncertain about their allowances, registration status and ability to continue with their studies.

As the newly elected NSRC, we have already engaged University Management and the relevant administrative structures. These engagements have been constructive. The University has confirmed that it is ready to process the relevant registrations and payments once the required funds and confirmations are received from NSFAS and the responsible Funza Lushaka authorities.

During his engagement with students and the University, the Deputy Minister committed to engaging the relevant funding authorities to support the earlier release of funds. We welcome this commitment and believe that there is now a shared responsibility among the Department, NSFAS, the Funza Lushaka authorities, Unisa and the NSRC to ensure that students receive their funding without further unnecessary delay.

We therefore appeal for the urgent release and confirmation of all outstanding funding required for:

• NSFAS student allowances;
• Funza Lushaka student allowances;
• second-semester registration top-ups;
• newly registered students; and
• the finalisation of registrations for all affected funded students.

We acknowledge the steps already taken by Unisa to engage the relevant funding bodies and to keep the NSRC informed. We will continue working with the University and all responsible stakeholders to ensure that affected students are supported and receive verified information as soon as it becomes available.

As your newly elected NSRC, we will continue to represent your concerns and advocate for the urgent release of all outstanding funding. We will remain constructive, but we will also remain firm in defending the interests and dignity of students.

We believe that all stakeholders share one commitment: no student should be prevented from registering, studying or meeting their basic needs because of avoidable funding delays.
