This graduation season celebrates more than academic achievements; it honours stories of resilience, sacrifice, determination and hope. The journeys of Chris Mahlasela, Thembani Buyisiwe Mbatha, Goodman Mfaniseni Mkhwanazi and Nomusa Mathe demonstrate how perseverance and a commitment to lifelong learning can transform challenges into remarkable success.

For Chris Mahlasela, earning an Honours Degree in Business Management represents the fulfilment of a dream shaped by hard work, faith and the enduring influence of his late mother. Balancing his studies with work and family responsibilities, Chris remained committed to his academic goals despite experiencing one of the most painful moments of his life when his mother passed away shortly before his examinations. Although he failed that examination attempt, he refused to give up, re-registered and continued pursuing his qualification. Today, he celebrates his achievement as a testament to resilience, determination and the values his mother instilled in him.

Similarly, Buyisiwe Mbatha’s academic journey was driven by a passion for knowledge and a desire to help others access information. After completing a Bachelor of Information Science Honours degree, she reflected on years of dedication, discipline and perseverance. Despite the pressures of balancing academic demands with personal responsibilities, she remained focused on her goals. Supported by her family, lecturers and mentors, Buyisiwe developed valuable skills in research, critical thinking and information management, which she plans to use to improve access to knowledge and information within communities and organisations.

For Goodman Mkhwanazi, graduation is a tribute to the sacrifices of a mother whose memory continues to guide his life three decades after her passing. Raised by a hardworking mother who did everything possible to provide for her children and later by his grandmother, Goodman learnt the values of resilience, service and perseverance from an early age. While working full-time in local government, he successfully completed a Bachelor of Arts in Government, Administration and Development, strengthening his ability to contribute meaningfully to public service. His achievement honours the legacy of the women who shaped his life and fuels his determination to continue serving his community through leadership and education.

Nomusa Mathe’s graduation story is equally inspiring. A single parent living with a disability, she overcame numerous obstacles to earn a Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Management. Faced with challenges such as poor network coverage, load shedding and family responsibilities, Nomusa remained steadfast in her pursuit of education. Inspired by her late mother’s entrepreneurial spirit and financial management skills, she developed the resilience and adaptability needed to succeed. Her qualification marks the beginning of a journey toward building a successful career in finance while creating a better future for her family and community.

Although their paths were different, these graduates share a common belief: success is not determined by the challenges one faces, but by the courage to keep moving forward despite them. Through loss, hardship, demanding responsibilities and personal obstacles, they remained committed to their goals and emerged stronger because of their experiences.

Their stories embody the values of perseverance, discipline, faith, lifelong learning and service. As they celebrate this significant milestone, they inspire current and future students to remain focused on their dreams, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and believe in the power of education to transform lives.

Together, they remind us that every graduation gown carries a unique story of sacrifice and determination—and that with resilience, support and unwavering commitment, the sky is truly the limit.
