For a continent like Africa, there are complexities upon complexities including the fact that it faces a set of socio-cultural, political upheavals, heavy reliance on Western countries, as well as a long hangover recovery from colonialism. Many countries including stable states are characterised by ‘wicked problems’ such as high unemployment rate among youth which is the highest population group in the world, corruption, pandemics such as Covid-19 and Ebola, poor governance, inadequate infrastructure, skills shortage, digital divide, and the list is endless.
These challenges are infinite and institutions of higher learning in Africa are not fully engaging with them. As a result of not coping with these challenges, Africa is left behind and needs to play catch-up. However, there are pockets of excellence and opportunities in Africa, including youthful population which offers a massive demographic dividend with the potential for expanded workforce, rapid technological adoption, market growth, and entrepreneurial drive.
While such population faces challenges to access higher education due to current geopolitics, financial cuts, mobility restrictions, language and other factors, partnerships with industry, especially financial sector, governments, communities, civil society and other universities within the continent, offer opportunities including financial investments & scholarships, curriculum co-creation, science diplomacy, internationalisation, entrepreneurship and capacity expansion. Working together may help the African continent to go far and be able to finance higher education, expand and secure digital infrastructure, facilitate youth mobility within the continent, reduce costs for devices and data, nurture local innovation, promote inter and multidisciplinary, as well as enable access to higher education. African science is a vital engine for solving grand challenges such as climate change, food security, and public health, when driven by context-specific research and localised innovation. By aligning bold research with regional contexts, African scientists are actively shaping global agendas and creating sustainable, scalable solutions in astrology, marine studies, water and space sciences.
It should be, however, noted that since the emergence of postcolonialism, there has been a call for epistemic decolonisation in the African scientific community. Scholars in Africa and diaspora have repeatedly raised the need for rethinking anew sciences for Africa to reflect glonacol (global, national, continental, and local issues) best practices. The pandemics, disruptive technologies, and current developments in changing global geopolitics, specifically the US travel ban on several countries, as well as the raging war in the Middle East have led to a dire situation that requires repositioning of sciences in the higher education landscape in Africa. Institutions of higher education, especially those which offer open distance education are best placed and central to mitigating most of these grand societal challenges facing the African continent. The proliferation of disruptive technologies, the youthfulness population, as well as minerals and natural resources in Africa, offer open distance education institutions the opportunity not to be missed to solve grand societal challenges.
Despite these challenges, Africa stands at a pivotal moment. The convergence of shifting geopolitics, accelerating technologies, ecological stress, and demographic momentum presents a rare opportunity for the continent to reframe the sciences not as peripheral adopters of Global North epistemologies but as engines of sovereignty, inclusion, and planetary stewardship. To seize the opportunity, the continent needs to rethink how science is funded, developed, taught, governed, translated into industry and policy, and embedded in culture. The goal is not to play “catch up” to a moving frontier defined outside the continent but to define frontiers that reflect African priorities and values, covering health, food security, innovation, climate adaptation, dignified work, transportation, space science, and cultural flourishing, while also embracing the global agenda.
With these infinite challenges, universities in Africa need to reposition anew sciences to respond to the new geopolitical era, technological disruption, demographic shifts to ensure sustainability within the continent. This calls for policy reforms for increasing targeted financial support such as scholarships, bursaries, and travel grants to mitigate economic barriers for students, developing tailored orientation programmes and academic support services that address language, cultural adjustment, and digital transformation needs to enhance student preparedness and confidence, innovation opportunities for youthful dividends, redefine place of Africa in the world and African universities in Africa, and emerging fields. The emphasis of a responsive university is on preparing students for a globalised environment where technologies and international influences must be understood and embraced to function effectively in a global economy.
The ACDE 2027 International Conference convenes at a pivotal moment in the evolution of higher education, as geopolitics, international mobility, collaboration, and digital transformation fundamentally reshape how learning is designed, accessed, delivered, experienced, and measured. The Conference provides a platform for scholars, practitioners, students, policymakers, industry partners, diplomats, and educational leaders to critically engage with these emerging developments and explore how African institutions can harness exponential technologies to build intelligent universities that are inclusive, ethical, resilient, and future-ready. Central to these discussions is the need to contextualise innovation within African realities, ensuring that technological transformation advances equity, expands access, enhances quality, and contributes meaningfully to sustainable socio-economic development across the continent.
