Producing over 40% of teachers in South Africa
A moment of triumph as Ntokozo Pamela Mathabathe celebrates her graduation, marking the culmination of years of perseverance, leadership and personal growth
For Ntokozo Pamela Mathabathe, graduating with a Bachelor of Education degree in Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology marks the achievement of a dream she has nurtured since childhood. It also signals the conclusion of an impactful chapter as Deputy Secretary of the Tshwane Regional Student Representative Council (RSRC), where she dedicated herself to advocating for students and helping them navigate the challenges of university life.
Mathabathe’s passion for teaching began at an early age. Inspired by educators who served as role models throughout her schooling, she developed a clear vision for her future. She pursued a qualification that would enable her to make a meaningful contribution to young people's lives.
Her decision to study through Unisa was initially influenced by a desire to remain close to home while pursuing her academic ambitions. However, what started as a comfortable option soon became a platform for personal growth and exploration.
"Being an online student gave me the luxury of studying in my comfort zone at home. Ironically, now I am conquering the world through Unisa," she reflects.
Like many distance-learning students, Mathabathe encountered obstacles along the way. Studying in isolation and managing the pressures of online examinations often brought moments of uncertainty and anxiety. Rather than allowing these challenges to define her experience, she used them as motivation to support other students facing similar difficulties.
Drawing from her own experiences, she became involved in initiatives that provided students with guidance, support and resources, particularly during examination periods. Her commitment to student well-being would later become a defining feature of her leadership journey.
Balancing academic responsibilities with RSRC commitments required discipline and careful time management. Throughout her term in student leadership, she remained focused on the reason she had enrolled at the university in the first place: to earn her qualification while making a positive impact on the student community.
Student leadership also transformed her personally. Once a quiet and reserved individual, Mathabathe found her voice through student activism and representation. The experience equipped her with confidence, leadership skills and a stronger sense of purpose.
Her work as an RSRC leader was largely driven by a desire to support students from disadvantaged and rural communities. Having experienced some of the challenges they faced, she became determined to serve as a bridge between students and the university, ensuring that their concerns were heard and addressed.
Beyond leadership, the exposure to professionals, academics and institutional leaders inspired her to think bigger about her future. Today, she is mentoring student teachers, tutoring mathematics learners through Unisa initiatives, and pursuing further studies to advance her academic career.
Graduation remains one of the proudest moments of her journey. Having watched many students cross the graduation stage over the years, she always envisioned herself experiencing that moment.
"It has always been a dream," she says. "Since 2019, I have always said that one day I would walk across that stage."
As she looks ahead, Mathabathe remains committed to lifelong learning and community development. Her message to current students is one of perseverance, resilience and hope.
When asked to summarise her Unisa journey, she offers a response that perfectly captures her experience: "My Unisa journey was Character Development 101."
Her story serves as a reminder that academic success is about more than obtaining a qualification; it is also about growth, resilience, leadership and the courage to step beyond one's comfort zone.
