The African college of excellence in the social and human sciences
Prof Lindokuhle Ubisi
The appointment of Prof Lindokuhle Ubisi as the first and youngest Black male Chair of the Department of Psychology in the College of Human Sciences (CHS) at Unisa marks a significant milestone in the institution's history. It represents a powerful step towards greater diversity and transformation in higher education.
For Ubisi, the achievement is more than a personal accomplishment. It is the culmination of years of perseverance, resilience and unwavering support from teachers and mentors who encouraged him to pursue his dreams despite the challenges he encountered along the way.
Reflecting on his journey, Ubisi describes his appointment as both humbling and dreamlike. "I owe a huge part of my success to the incredible teachers and mentors who always encouraged me to dream big and never give up. Their belief in my potential inspired me to persevere, even when the road ahead seemed uncertain."
Growing up, Ubisi faced numerous obstacles on his path to academia. Entering a field where few leaders reflected his own identity presented additional challenges, but it also strengthened his determination to succeed. Motivated by the conviction that education can transform lives and communities, he remained committed to academic excellence and leadership.
Today, as he assumes one of the most influential academic positions within the Department of Psychology, Ubisi is determined to foster an environment that celebrates diversity, encourages innovation and promotes academic excellence. He believes that psychology, like many academic disciplines, benefits immensely from the inclusion of diverse voices and lived experiences.
"Our greatest strength lies in our different perspectives," he says. "Every student and researcher brings unique experiences that enrich our understanding of human behaviour and strengthen our academic community." As Chair of the Department, Ubisi has committed himself to creating opportunities that empower students, early-career academics and emerging researchers. Through mentorship, collaboration and access to resources, he hopes to cultivate an environment where talent is recognised, nurtured and allowed to flourish.
His message to aspiring researchers is one of courage and persistence: "Chase your dreams without fear. Every setback is a stepping stone towards success. Some of the most meaningful discoveries are born from challenges. Believe in your ideas, share your voice and never be afraid to challenge the status quo."
Ubisi also acknowledges the generations of scholars, educators and leaders who fought tirelessly for greater representation and equality within South African academia. He believes their sacrifices have created opportunities for a new generation of academics to lead and inspire.
"We have a responsibility to honour those who came before us by creating inclusive spaces where future generations can dream bigger and achieve even more," he says.
As Unisa continues its commitment to academic transformation and excellence, Ubisi's historic appointment serves as an inspiring example of what is possible through determination, mentorship and a shared commitment to inclusive leadership. Concluding his reflection, he expresses sincere appreciation to the teachers, mentors, colleagues, students, friends and family members who have supported him throughout his academic journey.
"I hope my journey encourages others to push beyond perceived limitations, pursue excellence and believe that their dreams are both valid and achievable. Together, we can continue to inspire one another and build an academic community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed."
Prof Lindokuhle Ubisi's appointment represents more than a personal milestone – it is a landmark achievement for CHS, the discipline of Psychology and the broader transformation of higher education in South Africa. His leadership signals a future where excellence, diversity and opportunity go hand in hand, inspiring the next generation of scholars to pursue their aspirations with confidence and purpose.
